ABS plastic – all you need to know

This acrylic polymer contains acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), which is an amorphous material. The heat of heating ABS causes it to react.

A thermoplastic, such as ABS plastic, becomes liquid at certain temperatures (221 degrees Fahrenheit); this is called a “glass transition”. It will not have a significant effect if they are heated to their melting point, cooled, and reheated.

Thermoset plastics can only be heated by injection molding. A thermoset (such as a two-part epoxy) is set by heat, which permanently changes its chemical makeup. The thermoset plastic would simply melt at high temperatures. Because of this, thermosets are not recyclable. Additionally, ABS is an amorphous material since it lacks the ordered properties of crystal structure.

How did ABS get its start?

A polymerization method most commonly used to make ABS is emulsions (combinations of multiple compounds into one). Milk is one example of an emulsified product.

Furthermore, ABS is also made by continuous mass polymerization, a technique that is less common. ABS is most commonly made by emulsion polymerization.
